Chat on a Mat: Emily Briffa of Hamlet Hobart

Emily Briffa is a social entrepreneur who believes that business can and should play a part in tackling entrenched social disadvantage. On moving to Hobart she noticed Tasmania’s high unemployment level and left her job as a chef to found Hamlet Cafe –  a registered charity that provides practical work experience and hands-on training placements to people who face barriers that prevent them from participating in work and community life. Hamlet provides a safe place for people to grow, learn and refine their skills and find self empowerment.

We caught up with Emily over Littlewood strawberries served on Pigeon Whole Bakers fruit toast with Tongola goats curd, black pepper and honey…because that’s Hamlet!

  1. What is the best part of what you do? I love watching our participants becoming more confident and developing new skills.

  2. What do you love about living and working in Tasmania? I’m originally from Melbourne but I love living in Tassie. I really enjoy being close to nature and I think Hobart has beautiful sense of community.

  3. Favourite Tasmanian Restaurant? I love eating at all the amazing restaurants in Hobart. I’m a bit of a regular at Tom McHugos. The food there is delicious and it’s a really nice relaxed vibe.

  4. Fave yoga pose and why? Child's Pose is a bit of a favourite of mine.

  5. Song that gets you on the dance floor? I’ve got a soft spot for old school RnB.

  6. Favourite place to travel? I would love to get back to Japan.

  7. What do you eat when you get there? Anything and everything.

  8. What is your dream project? I would really love to see Hamlet expand and open another site so that we can assist more Tasmanians.
